The rules of the Index
It is 8 November 2026. The clocks have gone back, the heating is making that noise again, and the 17:42 from Leeds has been cancelled due to a shortage of train crew. This is the season when music has to do more than sound good. It has to survive the commute, the damp flat, the early darkness and the temptation to put on the same four songs until March.
So here is the Sublimit Index: a fan-obsessive ranking of Autechre's studio albums judged against UK winter realities. Each record is scored out of 10 for atmosphere (does it suit the grey?), endurance (can you take it on a bad Tuesday?) and replay value (will it still work in February?). That gives a maximum Sublimit score of 30. It is subjective. It is also correct.
15. NTS Sessions 1-4 — Sublimit score: 16/30
Atmosphere 7, endurance 3, replay 6. Eight hours of Autechre is a beautiful thing and a terrible thing to start at 7am on a dark bus. This is a weekend project, a headphones-and-flask situation, not something to soundtrack a delayed Northern service. Winter is already long enough.
14. Quaristice — Sublimit score: 17/30
Atmosphere 6, endurance 5, replay 6. Restless, sketchy and oddly charming, but it feels like a bus replacement service: lots of short stops, no clear destination. There are gems in here, yet the album's fidgety mood can make a damp evening feel more chaotic rather than less.
13. elseq 1-5 — Sublimit score: 17/30
Atmosphere 7, endurance 4, replay 6. A vast, rewarding sprawl that absolutely refuses to be a winter companion on demand. Pick a single volume and it works; press play on the whole thing in November and you may emerge in spring with a beard and a new understanding of modular synthesis.
12. Draft 7.30 — Sublimit score: 19/30
Atmosphere 7, endurance 6, replay 6. Grey, prickly and intellectually satisfying. It suits the walk home when you are annoyed at everyone, but it is not exactly a comfort listen. File under: good for frosty mornings, bad for frosty moods.
11. Untilted — Sublimit score: 20/30
Atmosphere 7, endurance 6, replay 7. Sharp, abrasive and weirdly energising. This is a record for walking fast past closed shops with your hood up. It does not warm you up, but it does keep you moving, which is half the battle in a UK winter.
10. Incunabula — Sublimit score: 21/30
Atmosphere 8, endurance 7, replay 6. The early warmth is genuine, and those analogue pads can feel like a radiator you are not allowed to turn up. The only problem is that it now sounds a bit like a museum exhibit — lovely, but not always the thing you reach for when the rain is horizontal.
9. PLUS — Sublimit score: 22/30
Atmosphere 8, endurance 7, replay 7. The softer sibling to SIGN, and a decent blanket for long nights in. It drifts without disappearing, which is exactly what you want when the flat is cold and the kettle is doing its best.
8. SIGN — Sublimit score: 23/30
Atmosphere 9, endurance 7, replay 7. Frosty, spacious and genuinely beautiful in places. It is the aural equivalent of a clear, freezing night: you admire it, you feel small, and then you want to go inside. A strong winter record, though not an everyday one.
7. Oversteps — Sublimit score: 23/30
Atmosphere 8, endurance 8, replay 7. Warmer and more melodic than its reputation suggests. There are moments here that feel like a stained-glass window in a bus shelter — unlikely, but welcome. It survives a commute better than most late-period Autechre.
6. Exai — Sublimit score: 23/30
Atmosphere 9, endurance 6, replay 8. Two hours of dense, slippery machinery. It is brilliant, but it asks a lot of you. On a good day it is a winter epic; on a bad day it is another thing demanding your attention when you have none left.
5. Chiastic Slide — Sublimit score: 24/30
Atmosphere 9, endurance 7, replay 8. This one gets the winter mood exactly right: metallic, murky, and strangely moving. It sounds like a city in November — all wet tarmac and orange streetlight — without ever tipping into parody.
4. Amber — Sublimit score: 25/30
Atmosphere 9, endurance 8, replay 8. The obvious comfort pick, and sometimes the obvious pick is correct. Amber is warm without being soft, and it has enough melancholy to feel honest in the dark. Put it on while the radiators clank. It works.
3. LP5 — Sublimit score: 26/30
Atmosphere 9, endurance 8, replay 9. Icy, elegant and endlessly replayable. This is the album for the 6:30am walk to the station, when the pavements are slick and the sky is the colour of old dishwater. It does not cheer you up. It makes the gloom feel deliberate.
2. Confield — Sublimit score: 27/30
Atmosphere 10, endurance 8, replay 9. Still the great winter headphone record. It is alien and cold, but there is a strange comfort in its precision — a reminder that chaos can be ordered, even if only for an hour. Not for every day, but essential when the nights draw in.
1. Tri Repetae — Sublimit score: 28/30
Atmosphere 10, endurance 9, replay 9. The winner, and not just because it is the obvious one. Tri Repetae is cold, clean and endlessly useful: it suits the train, the walk, the damp flat and the long night in. It has the rare quality of making a UK winter feel less like an inconvenience and more like a setting. That is worth 28 points and a place by the radiator.
